Although it can be fun to try new restaurants with friends, more and more people are starting to entertain at home—it definitely saves money and can be a much easier way to get together with a big group. One fun way to get friends together is by throwing an apartment potluck. If you’re not familiar with the concept, it’s when a small group of people throws a sort of collaborative dinner party, with each guest providing a portion of the meal. Here are a few good tips for holding your own.

1. Since you’re hosting, take responsibility for the main entrée yourself—make something that’s hearty and not portable, like a roast or a turkey.

2. When your guests RSVP, figure out a dish they can bring to make sure the whole menu is represented. But don’t assign them recipes—that’s rude. Let them show their creativity. Make sure you have appetizers, salads, sides, and desserts all represented.

3. Usually it’s the host’s responsibility to provide drinks as well, but don’t feel like you need to put up a full bar—a well-chosen wine and a similar beer should be plenty. In many cases, your guests may bring an extra bottle or two.

4. Most of all have fun—take the time to sit down and savor.
